Voices From Chornobyl began in 2005 when Cindy was looking for a new project and her colleague Nina Soukasian handed her the book of interviews by now Nobel Winner Svetlana Alexievich. Nina had seen an actress perform the opening, A Single Solitary Human Voice, as a monologue to protest nuclear power in Europe. Once Cindy read the book of interviews, however, she heard them as a chorus, an ensemble of experience who could together tell the many stories hidden in the Exclusion Zone and surrounding cities.
Her awareness piece Voices From Chornobyl has been presented in both the US (2006-2011) and the UK to raise money and knowledge of the nuclear accident (inspired by Svetlana Alexievich‘s interviews). In 2007, Cindy was invited to be the Key Note Speaker at the UK Remember Chernobyl Conference in Manchester, England, where she premiered the demo and offered copies to Chernobyl charities to raise funds. Voices From Chornobyl Jr. premiered and won Best of 2011 Fringe. In April 2016, she’ll tweet the entire script to raise awareness of the 30th anniversary @VoicesChornobyl.
Other works include her short play Dragon Compact, which premiered as part of Moving Arts’ The Car Plays LA, in the Radar LA International Festival. Her play Fatima Quest had a segment workshopped at The Indy Convergence. She’s performed as a Storyteller in the Hollywood Fringe Festival tent, Santa Monica Rep’s 2011 Brecht Gala and Electric Lodge’s max10 series. She is currently finishing two novels, one an adaptation of Hamlet from Horatio’s point-of-view and another of The Oresteia from Electra’s perspective.
She regularly contributes to Dwarf+Giant and The Clyde Fitch Report. She has written for The Mary Sue, TCG NATIONAL CONFERENCE on AUDIENCE & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, Ms in the Biz, Bitter Lemons (now Better Lemons), LAFPI, ArtJob.org (Arts For LA), LA Stage Times, Atwater Village Now, The Inspired Classroom, Theatre @ Boston Court & The Comics Observer.
